Description

No avid enthusiast's collection will be complete without this magnificent piece of work on the Encephalartos Nubimontanus. By combining detailed illustrations and beautiful colour photographs, the author successfully manages to enrich the content and provide new insights on this species.

The name, Encephalartos Nubimontanus, was derived from Latin, with ‘nubilus' meaning ‘grey blue' and ‘montanus' translating into ‘growing on the mountain'. Not surprisingly so, seeing that the species is known only from one small area in the northern Drakensberg escarpment in Limpopo Province, South Africa. This area is aptly called the Wolkberg (literally ‘cloudy mountain'), and found at an altitude of 1000m. Encephalartos Nubimontanus was first described by this name by P.J.H Hurter in 1995. (In 1996 P.J Voster described it as Encephalartos Venetus.)

For the purpose of this book, data for eleven variants have been recorded, and differences in terms of leaves, pinnae, male and female cones and seeds have been described in distinguishing the variants.
